She stood alone, by the bank of that dark river. Her once lovely dress has been torn, and she shivered in the cold. The city lights shone behind her in the distance, but she did not see them. She did not hear the commotion of the busy streets around her, of the parties in the houses down the way.
She stood alone on the edge of that river, watching the swirling black water below her. One step in any direction but back and it would consume her. But what did it matter? The darkness had chased her for years. It was only now that she turned to face it.
Adrenaline coursed through her body, each nerve screaming to turn and run. She would not. She had run for too long, and had lost everything. Her mother, her brother, her friends and everything she’d loved, it had taken. She had nothing now. She had nothing to lose.
Standing alone, she remembered her mother’s voice whispering to her. You can stop it, her mother had once said. You can f
